Symptoms you shouldn’t ignore

Toothache
One thing is certain: if the pain is severe, if it wakes you up at night, or if it radiates to the jaw or ear — it’s an emergency. Taking painkillers may provide temporary relief, but it won’t solve the problem.

A broken or cracked tooth
A broken tooth can be very painful — or not at all, at first. Even if there is no immediate pain, you should seek medical advice. An untreated crack can worsen and compromise the tooth entirely.
If a piece of tooth has come loose: keep it, rinse it under clean water, and bring it with you.

Infection and swelling
This is serious. A dental infection can spread if left untreated. If this happens, call immediately on: +352 261270.

A dental abscess
An abscess will not heal on its own. Dental treatment is required — sometimes accompanied by antibiotics. The longer you wait, the more likely the infection is to spread to neighbouring tissues.

What should you do before coming to the surgery?
Pain
What you can do
Severe pain
Take a standard painkiller (paracetamol). Avoid aspirin if you are bleeding.
Swelling / infection
Apply cold to the affected area (never heat). Drink cold drinks, not hot ones.
Broken tooth
Keep the piece in a little water or milk. Do not force it.
Tooth knocked out of its socket
Gently put it back in place or keep it in milk. See a dentist immediately.
Filling or crown fallen
Do not try to reattach it yourself. Protect the area if sensitive to cold/heat.
Bleeding
Bite gently on a clean compress. If it doesn’t stop, call.
Do not take antibiotics without a prescription. This does not replace dental care and may mask the infection without treating it.
